Message from the president

Dear colleagues,

 

Six weeks ago, in Vienna, the ISSMGE Council entrusted me with the presidency of this Society, and I have thought of little else since. I write to you now for the first time as President, with enormous pride and no small sense of the scale of what lies ahead: 92 national societies with more than 21,000 members, six regions, one shared discipline holding up, quite literally, the ground beneath everything else we build. 

This is the first issue of a newsletter I will write to you regularly throughout my term, a way of staying close to you and to everyone this Society exists to serve. What has always struck me about ISSMGE is not any single achievement, but the sheer breadth of people it brings together, engineers and researchers, young and experienced, from every corner of the world, all drawn by the same conviction: that the ground beneath us deserves our very best thinking.

 

Today also happens to be my own country, Switzerland's national day. It is a small nation, home to four languages and a great many distinct cantons and traditions, and yet those differences give way to something shared, an identity built from that diversity rather than despite it. This Society works the same way: 92 national societies, each with its own history, language and character, choosing to stand together and become something larger for it.

ISSMGE's FedIGS Keynote at IAEG 2026

At the invitation of the International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment (IAEG), I will deliver the Keynote Lecture of the Federation of International Geo-Engineering Societies (FedIGS) at the XV IAEG 2026 World Congress, to be held in Delft, the Netherlands, from 30 October to 6 November 2026.

FedIGS brings together the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE), IAEG, the International Society for Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering (ISRM), and the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS) to strengthen collaboration across the geo-engineering community.

 

My lecture, "Carbon Dioxide Injection into Deep Aquifers: A Geomechanical Perspective," is delivered as part of an international tour tied to my 2026 InterPore Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lectureship Award. The Congress itself is themed "Engineering Geology in a Rapidly Changing World," and it is a fitting stage for the subject. Carbon storage is a clear example of how geotechnical engineering contributes to sustainability and climate change mitigation, an area our Society continues to advance.

New Technical Committees

Two new Technical Committees have just been approved, and they point to where geotechnical engineering is heading.

 

TC223 Bio-Geotechnics, chaired by Gráinne El Mountassir, turns living systems into geotechnical solutions. Bacteria, fungi and plants are already being used to bind soil, precipitate minerals in situ, and stabilise ground in ways conventional cement and chemical treatments cannot match, work with real implications for sustainable construction and ground improvement worldwide. The committee brings together specialists across biocementation, biopolymers and bioinspired design, and its task forces run from strengthening academia-industry partnerships to educating the next generation of engineers in a field that barely existed a decade ago. It is a further demonstration of our ongoing contribution to sustainable solutions across the profession. Read more on TC223 Bio-Geotechnics.

 

TC310 Space Geotechnics, chaired by Zili Li, takes ISSMGE further than it has gone before. As lunar and Martian missions move from exploration toward permanent infrastructure, the geotechnical challenge of building on other worlds becomes real. The committee already includes representatives from NASA and ESA alongside academic members from around the world, working on the ground conditions that will underpin the next era of human expansion into space, and it has set out to build ties with commercial and national space programmes as vehicles, launch infrastructure and permanent habitats move from ambition toward reality. ISSMGE Responds to the Venezualan Earthquake

On behalf of ISSMGE, I extend our deepest sympathy to the people of Venezuela and to our colleagues across the Latin American geotechnical community, following the earthquakes of 24 June. Our thoughts remain with the families who have lost so much, and with the responders working in extremely difficult conditions.

 

Through Geo-Engineers Without Borders (GeoWB), the former ISSMGE committee for bringing geotechnical expertise to disaster-affected regions, ISSMGE contributed in the response. A technical mission, coordinated by the Venezuelan and Chilean Geotechnical Societies, has travelled to Venezuela to assist the authorities and local engineers with their efforts on the ground. In Costa Rica, the Asociación Costarricense de Geotecnia held a live technical discussion on seismic resilience in the days that followed, open to engineers, geologists and students across the region, a further sign of how closely the wider community is standing behind Venezuela.

 

It is at moments like this that our network shows its purpose most clearly, moving expertise to where it is needed, across borders and without delay.
